Hope everybody has a Merry Christmas or a Happy Holiday or whatever you call this time of year. May one of your gifts be your favorite sports team winning a championship this coming year.

We Have A Winner?

Oh. My. God. I know one time Fox News once reported a story from The Onion as fact, but I think this tops that on hilarity alone.

While you’re at it, go follow @scottspeed on Twitter. He’s a hoot!

Why Didn’t Budweiser Think Of This?

Free beer in Sochi? Of course! All you need is a Canadian passport. Just swipe it on the reader and the fridge opens.

So… who’s going to let me borrow their passport? I’m thirsty.

There’s Problems, And Then There’s #SochiProblems

In a related matter, I wonder if the property management company that’s responsible for the upkeep of the Lair might be in Sochi…

Why I Watch Twitter During Football Games

There's no way CBS's New York studio will cut into your game to show you highlights like this.

Halloween Baseball

My alma mater recently had a game at Tony Gwynn Stadium, but it wasn’t your typical SDSU baseball game. This time, the team was split up into two teams (Red Team & Black Team) and played a four inning game – in Halloween costumes!

I especially liked Facebook, Charger Girl, the baby, and the Jamaican Bobsled Team.

If the video doesn’t work, refresh the page in your browser and try again. It seems to work that way. – H.

Bad Things Happen When You’re On The Cover & A Bold Prediction

Many of you may not be aware of it, but there is such a thing as The Sports Illustrated Cover Jinx. It’s not an urban legend. It’s a fact that several high profile athletes have had bad luck occur to them once they’ve been given the cover treatment. Consider some of the eerie things that occurred after athletes were featured on an SI cover, with publication dates included:

  • January 31, 1955 – skier Jill Kinmont was paralyzed from the chest down after a near-fatal accident that occurred the same week she appeared on the cover.
  • February 13, 1961 – figure skater Laurence Owen, as well as the rest of the U.S. Figure Skating Team, perished in a plane crash near Brussels, Belgium two days later.
  • June 7, 1971 – racers Al Unser and Peter Revson were both featured on the SI cover. Unser was hampered by retirements during subsequent races that season. Revson was killed while practicing for the 1974 South African Grand Prix.
  • July 30, 1984 – Steelers linebacker Jack Lambert suffered a turf toe injury that ended his career.
  • June 20, 1988 – boxer Michael Spinks appeared on the cover with the caption “Don’t Count Me Out”. Thanks to a Mike Tyson punch, the referee did exactly that in ninety-one seconds after the opening bell of their fight. Spinks never fought again.
  • December 6, 2000 – racers Dale Earnhardt and his son Dale Earnhardt Jr. shared the cover. Dale was killed two months later on the final lap of the 2001 Daytona 500.
  • September 2008 – Patriots quarterback Tom Brady was on the cover of the NFL Season Preview issue. During the team’s season opener, Brady was lost for the season with a serious knee injury.
  • October 15, 2011 – NASCAR racer Jimmie Johnson had an accident at Charlotte Motor Speedway later that month that ultimately stopped his championship winning streak at five years in a row.
  • February 17, 2012 – Knicks guard Jeremy Lin’s team had their six-game winning streak snapped by the New Orleans Hornets, at the time the second-worst team in the NBA.
  • February 23, 2012 – Lin, after making his second straight cover appearance, went 1 for 11 in a loss against the Miami Heat. The next month he tore the meniscus in his left knee and underwent season ending surgery.
  • May 15, 2013 – Grizzlies guard Mike Conley Jr. and his team were swept by the San Antonio Spurs 4-0 in the Western Conference Finals.
  • June 10, 2013 – The Spurs “Big 3” of Manu Ginobili, Tim Duncan and Tony Parker appear on this week’s cover.

I know HESPN (that H is for the 30 minutes of coverage ESPN devotes to the Miami Heat during SportsCenter every night) wants the Spurs to lose, but SI has to give my team another obstacle to overcome? I know everyone hates the Spurs, but this is ridiculous.

I’m crossing my fingers Michael Jordan and his 49 SI cover appearances weren’t an aberration.

PREDICTION: Spurs win their fifth NBA championship in six games.

You Cannot Make This Stuff Up

Only in wrestling can you decide to go for a move and cause your anus to split wide open.

Sean “x-Pac” Waltman had an accident at Saturday’s indy event he was booked for when he did the ‘Bronco Buster’ move which, literally, split his anus open. When Waltman went for the Bronco Buster, his opponent moved out of the way and Waltman went flying into the ring post crotch-first.  Waltman went to the hotel afterwards and immediately got taken to the hospital.  He ended up needing surgery this morning.

This was posted on twitter by Ryan Shamrock, “We don’t know if there is a medical term for it…but he did a bronco buster last night that literally ripped his ass apart! :-/ Lost a lot of blood! Had surgery this morning and is on the road to recovery! Believe it or not..this has happened to him once before!

And the funny thing is that this has happened to him once before. I hope that his body is donated to science because there are medical students that would choose other professions after looking at what has to be a big hole.

Tough Being a NHL Player During The Lockout In Toronto

Joffrey Lupul is a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs.  He decided that he wanted a meal at the Real Sports Restaurant.  However he was one of a few patrons that are not being served in the restaurant.  Why?  The Real Sports Restaurant is owned by the Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment Company, who is the owner of the Toronto Maple Leafs.  So what do you do when a locked out player decides to eat at your establishment?  You don't serve him.

But hey, if you're frustrated, Real Sports remains a great place to eat your feelings. Hockey or no hockey, at least you can still make a reservation to get together with a group of friends and eat a half dozen tiny burgers.
That is, unless you're a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs. As Joffrey Lupul just discovered, membership in the NHLPA means the lockout extends to the restaurant next door to the Air Canada Centre.
"Real Sports is not allowed to take reservations from Leafs players during the lockout," a bemused Lupul tweeted Sunday, "but will continue selling our jerseys for $300 a pop."

And it's not as though Real Sports is just using the lockout as a lame excuse to refuse Lupul a reservation because he's a bad tipper or something. James Van Riemsdyk corroborated Lupul's account. "Same thing happened to me a month ago," he tweeted in response (although both Leafs forwards have since deleted the tweets).

Talk about no respect.  Rodney Dangerfield would be appalled at that lack of respect.  The players and owners have staked out their position and the owners, at least up in Toronto, have said that they don't want money from the players to eat in their establishment.  Maybe that is why the Maple Leafs look like an expansion team.

The Worst Injury That I Have Heard Of In A While

Dude got taken out by his girlfriend.  He is an MMA fighter and she caused a major injury.

Ray Elbe, who competed on Season 9 of “The Ultimate Fighter,” announced on Saturday that he sustained one of the most horrifying injuries we can think of: a broken penis. No, the injury did not occur while he was fighting; it actually happened while he was having sex.

Elbe explained in a video posted on his website over the weekend that the injury occurred while he was having sex with his girlfriend in Malaysia on Dec. 3. He says his penis broke (ed note: there is no bone to break) when his girlfriend landed hard on him. Blood began spraying everywhere.

“I ended up fracturing my penis bone … I tore the urinary tract, tore some membrane — as it happened you can imagine the shock and the horror that was going on,” Elbe said in the video. “I jumped up from the intimate moment, blood shooting out of my groin. I immediately tried to run to the shower, felt myself losing consciousness, tried to walk back to the bed at which point I collapsed, knocking myself out. I gave myself 10 stitches and fractured a couple teeth.”

Elbe says he tried treating himself after coming to, and that his girlfriend was frantic. She called emergency while he was laying naked on the floor in a pool of blood.

Elbe says he spent 13 days — including his birthday — in the hospital, and that he’s still using a catheter to urinate. He says he’s going back for a checkup on Dec. 19 where the catheter should be removed.

Maybe Dana White should be looking at the girlfriend to step into the octagon.  If she can cause a critical injury like that to her boyfriend, she can do damage to people that she wants to hurt.  And apparently the missionary position wasn't being utilized.  See what happens when you don't do things the traditional way!

Big 10 Mascots Dancing To "Call Me Maybe"

Why?  Because it is funny and we need more content on the blog.
