Sox trade for Hinske, sign Pena

So the Sox need pitching help in a bad way, so what do they do, go sign two first basemen......WTF!!!!????

Hinske Trade

Carlos Pena

It's beginning to look a lot like 2003. We've now got like 4 first basemen/DH types. I'm not sure what the plan is, I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Your thoughts???

I agree that these moves seem somewhat redundant with respect to what positions we already have amply filled, but with the 40-man roster available shortly, having a deep bench certainly can't hurt. In addition, Wells seems to be on the right track and Wakefield and Foulke are just around the corner. If they are both healthy and the effective pitchers of old, that constitues some new blood right there. Having said that, I would like to see them get some
new arms too - hopefully Theo pulls off a sick deal in the stretch.
I guess we'll just have to see how the old guard holds up (not to mention the imminent Trot return), while hoping that the boys in the deep recesses of Fenway are working overtime.
I must admit that i'm, confoundedly, optimistic. This weekend should tell us a great deal where we're headed, of course, but I wouldn't write them off even if we do take it in the shorts. I still think there's a bunch of potential when some of the casualties come back (although Varitek will remain sorely missed.)
So am I loco?
