It wasn't a game winner, but still clutch...

The game just got over and Big Papi hits a Grand Blast to open the game up in the eighth, and what is Shields trying to fool Manny with an off speed pitch? Come on...this is Manny, the man who sets up pitchers. Wake comes through again and acts as the stopper again, his fifth win after a Sox lose this season. I'd hate to see the rant from AA if they'd been swept by the D-Rays. Definately a rated R rant at best.
A Gon hitting 272 with a triple last night, I won't make fun of Mirabelli scoring from first on that one, as I can sympathize with the need for oxygen!!!
Let's hope this gets them righted, so they can go into the All-Star break in a high note.
To close out, I know Zeb doesn't care, and that's mainly why I bring this up, but Nomar got the last spot on the NL All-Star roster. Go NOMAR!!!!! I for one think it's great he's having such a good year.

They were talking about Ortiz and Manny this morning on XM Homeplate, how could you ignore a performance like last night, Papi with 6 RBI, 2 homeruns, one a grand slam, and Manny with a dinger of his own. What they were talking about was Manny's swing. Orestes Destrada was sayng he uses Manny's swing as the textbook in his clinics. Buck Martinez was saying he's only seen a handful of hitters with the power to center that Ortiz has, one other was Manny. This is something special we've had for the last four seasons. Is there a better 3, 4 punch in the history of baseball? Well I guess the '27 Yankees with Ruth hitting in the 3 hole and Gehrig in the clean up spot. Which presents an interesting question, would Ruth have hit the number of HRs with out that line up? How often would he have been pitched around or walked with out Gehrig hitting behind him?

Hey Cuz, I did say Nomar deserved it. W/out going back to Teddy, Griffey has the sweetest swing (lefty bias) but Manny's is right there, especially in my opinion when he's going to the opposite field.
Kudos to how well the kids (except Lopez) pitched last night.

Obviously that era is even beyond my memory. The make-someone-else beat you theory has been around forever (escalated with Bonds, just look at the walk ratio)

But I think overall pitching around guys is done more than in the past. When I was a kid and teen, the Palmers and Gibsons, et al would almost always go right at guys.

Good points AA and Zeb, the game has evolved a lot since then. Those things are hard to measure, but maybe Zeb has the best way look at the walk ratios.

I just hope that the kid's tendency to play with fire diminishes before it blows up in his face more than a couple of times. Josh is due for a dominating outing. DelCarmen comes right after hitters. He's been talking to Timlin.
